Being a Transgender in Pakistan is not a Taboo Anymore
Pakistani is
a land of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ethnicities. I can contemptuously
state that being a transgender in Pakistan is not a taboo anymore. A couple of
days ago, I witnessed a revolutionary post on my timeline. The fearless header,
pretty pictures, and a concrete message gave me Goosebumps!
Pakistan’s
first fashion campaign featuring transgender activist – Kami Sid. This fashion
drive is formed by Waqar J Khan. The campaign is designed to depict
social rights and primary notion that we all are an equal part of this society.
The idea is formed on a recent viral video where a transgender person was beaten.
Currently, In
Pakistan over a million and a half transgender people are residing. Unfortunately, in our localized language, we titled
them as Khwaja-sira, Kinnar, Badzaat or Hijra. If we browse our history,
Khawaja-siras were regarded as protectors of royal harems, tutors of art and
music, considered as caretakers, and protectors of the heritage.
Kami Sid is the
prominent transgender activist in Pakistan and has represented the Trans
society regionally and globally at numerous platforms. Being the face of this
fashion campaign Kami said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by
every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are
able to say to yourself, if I lived through this, I can take the next thing
that comes along”.
This campaign
absolutely defines that talent has no sexuality. The man behind this
encouraging campaign Waqar J Khan shared, “The entire Idea of taking a
transgender as a fashion model was to acknowledge a transgender as ordinary
individuals, to give them their rights and tell everybody transgender life
matters. Furthermore, working in the fashion industry I feel it's our social
obligation to make the masses comprehend their acknowledgment”.
Kami Sid is styled by Waqar J Khan, photographer Haseeb M. Siddiqi, and makeup done by Nighat Misbabut. The team raised an influential path for others to
follow. The progressive reasoning and a powerful approach connect with the
volumes. The campaign is the much-needed voice for the transgender community.
Kudos team for this astounding accomplishment.
